Black Lives Matter Sudbury will be hosting several virtual discussion panels, including one featuring keynote speaker, El Jones, as well as open-mic night and a film screening

In the continuation of Black History Month and look beyond the past, Black Lives Matter Sudbury will be hosting Black Futures Week from Feb. 26 to March 4, a combination of virtual and in person events.

“As more research is done on the school-to-prison nexus, where Black, Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQ+ youth find themselves surveilled and over-policed from grade school onwards, we do a deep dive into the idea of what ‘safety’ really means for our school communities,” reads a release from Black Lives Matter Sudbury.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 7-8:30 p.m. a virtual panel, called Zaagi'idwin will discuss Black and Indigenous solidarity. The panel will discuss the question, “What spaces exist that cater directly to the Black queer experience?” The Soul and Spirits open-mic night will be held at The Alibi Room on Friday, March 3 from 8-10 p.m. Described as an evening filled with Black, Indigenous and racialized talent, all community members are invited to attend for free, but note this event is 19+ due to the venue. If you would like to be a performer, you can register here.
