Bill C-21 changes unfairly targets hunters, local advocacy group says
Algoma Fish and Game Club leadership hopes the Liberal government is listening to concerns from the public that some of the firearms it's looking to ban through amendments to Bill C-21 are primarily used for hunting.
“No hunter or legal firearm-owning gun enthusiast likes this,” says Algoma Fish and Game Club Vice-President Sean Wonch, adding that the semi-automatic guns described in the amendment are fairly commonplace. “Nothing more inherently dangerous about them than any other gun.” Critics have said the amendment unfairly targets hunters and farmers while failing to address the country's issues with gun violence.
That sentiment also forms the basis of a petition launched by Hunters Headquarters Canada — a family-run hunting supply store and gun retailer located inside of The Trading Post — that will be delivered to Sault Ste. Marie MP Terry Sheehan sometime in the near future. Hunters Headquarters Canada says the petition has been garnering dozens of signatures on a daily basis since it was launched at the Sault Ste. Marie business late last month.
