Bridget Stirling, a former EPSB trustee now completing a PhD in education policy at the University of Alberta, told Postmedia Tuesday the UCP proposal is still concerning, in part because if it becomes policy it would have a “chilling” effect on teachers, who might avoid discussions about racism out of fear they’ll say the wrong thing.
“I think a lot of students are much more conscious of issues of racism and discrimination than students were 20 years ago. It doesn’t equate to students hating themselves. It means students are more aware of their social relations,” said Stirling. Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt told Postmedia there is a big gap between an election platform and party resolutions, and an even bigger gap between a government’s policy changes and recommendations from a party.
