David Eby tells the Star he’s counting on the federal government and drug experts to help his province make progress with issues that have dominated B.C. news.
VANCOUVER—Long before the pandemic, British Columbia was dealing with two major crises the provincial government had been unable improve, let alone solve.
Eby, originally from Kitchener, Ont., talked about what policy changes he hopes to achieve on the two issues in the next 12 months during a year-end interview with the Star. He said the housing crisis needs a response from many different angles. The province “has to be” involved in building middle class housing, he said, referencing the postwar federal government strategies to house returning soldiers. Those strategies focused on building low-cost rental housing and efforts to pave the way for home ownership.
The pressure could increase as Canada looks to bring in even more immigrants to the country, aiming to attract more than. It’s a number at the discretion of the federal government but provinces bear many of the burdens that such an influx will bring. “We’re going to have to be out there in front of their desks regularly and make sure to remind them so that B.C. is supported equally with other provinces,” he said.In August, he suggested to Postmedia that involuntary treatment for people who repeatedly overdose is a tool the province could use to address the drug crisis. The suggestion earned scorn from advocates for drug users, including from the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, which he once served as executive director.
