B.C. Lions have been exceptional on offence and defence this season. But their third unit has been a standout for all the wrong reasons.
B.C. platooned four different returners this season, from the explosive Lucky Whitehead, the Oreo-cookie-dunking Shai Ross, to Shane Wynn and Marcus Sayles, before trading for Ottawa’s Terry Williams in September to take over the return duties.Article contentThere’s only been a single punt returned for a touchdown this year —— but that’s not the metric that matters, said Lions special teams coordinator Don Yanowsky.
“I think the hardest job in the CFL and coaching special teams is developing your young guys or your core guys to play specials and understand specials in this league,” said Yanowsky, who’s been coaching for nearly 40 years, including two seasons with Leos head coach Rick Campbell in Ottawa. The numbers may be modest, but there are signs they’re improving. Williams came close in the fourth quarter last week, with only a push from Argos punter Josh Haggerty keeping him from a house call. It went in the books as a 35 yard return, and into Williams’ memory banks as a missed opportunity.Advertisement 6“But you know, there are some great punters in the league, you know I got to big-up the punters,” he added with a smile.
The last chance of the regular season will be Saturday at B.C. Place when the Lions host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Their last meeting in July saw Winnipeg’s Grant take a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. He’s also second in punt return average.Article content
