Maggie Burbidge of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women. - BRYAN KENNEDY / ST. F.X. ATHLETICSThe top leading scorers in Atlantic university women’s hockey were named to the team that will represent Canada in women’s hockey at next month’s FISU Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

St. Francis Xavier forwards Maggy Burbidge of Falmouth – who tops the nation with 18 goals and 34 points in 15 games – and Lea MacLeod of Dartmouth are among five AUS players who were selected to 22-person roster. MacLeod is second in the conference with 24 points. Saint Mary’s Huskies forward Shae Demale, a 2022 U Sports first-team all-star, was also named to the team along with blue-liner Jenna MacLean and goalie Kendra Woodland of the UNB Reds.“We are thrilled with the level of talent that makes up our roster,” said Team Canada head coach Greg Bowles of the Ottawa Gee-Gees. “Of course, there were very few ‘easy’ decisions as the level of talent across U Sports has never been better, and it certainly has never been deeper.

The 31st edition of the multi-sport event is set for Jan. 11-22. The women’s hockey preliminary round will be played in Potsdam, N.Y., while the medal round will be held at Lake Placid’s Olympic Center 1980 Rink. At the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, the Canadians earned the silver medal, falling 2-0 to the host Russians in the gold medal game. University of Montreal defender Annabel Faubert is the sole returnee from the 2019 Games. It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years. Our SaltWire team is always watching out for the place we call home.
