Providing people with the necessities of life and replacing identification documents are all things that must be addressed
Images of damaged homes and debris scattered everywhere coming out of Port aux Basques show the destruction Hurricane Fiona caused in the town. – Image from FacebookCHANNEL-PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. — As someone on the frontline providing assistance and relief to those impacted by post-tropical storm Fiona, Maj. David Harvey said the mood around Port aux Basques changes every day.
“Right now, unfortunately, I think people are just waiting to see what their houses are going to be deemed as. Whether they’re going to be able to live in or whether they’re going to be torn down,” said Harvey. For those able to return to their homes, Harvey said that comes with a new reality of what will they need to return — food, furniture, whatever.
Another need was addressed this week when Digital Government and Service NL set up a temporary motor registration office in the provincial courthouse for people to replace their driver’s licences, identification cards and the registration for their vehicles. Harvey said it’s likely many people were able to take their identification with them before having to leave their homes.
If people don’t have either of those, the Red Cross has been authorized to accept as an alternative a combination of their health card and any current utility or tax bill that shows their name or address.“It sounds simple to say well just bring your health card and your most recent power bill. But if that’s in your house and you can’t safely go back in there, how do we address that?” Bedell said.
