“We have heard from the community that they don’t feel as though the festival, in its current format, is inclusive to everyone,” said festival president Logan Morse. “That’s exactly what we want to keep,” Morse said. “We also want the competition to be open to everyone.”While a male has never participated in the competition, he noted technically they could have. But by changing the competition, officials hope it enables more people to see it as something they want to participate in.
While discussions about the leadership competition have occurred among residents for years, Morse acknowledged it was the most difficult decision the board has had to make since he became involved in 2016.
