Budget smaller than 2022, health unit needs more health inspectors
Algoma Public Health board members approved a budget of $17,740,689 for 2023 at its meeting held Wednesday.The budget is described as the minimum required as APH keeps up COVID-19 response, revitalizes its work force and gets back to working at its core, non-COVID programs.
Core APH programs include those addressing the opioid crisis, smoking cessation, public health inspections, oral health preventative clinics, routine immunizations, sexual health promotion and mental health promotion. “We have a significant backlog in our core, non-COVID work and unfortunately with that backlog there isn't specific recovery funding aligned to it to help us catch up so that needs to be addressed through our regular funding for that,” said Dr. John Tuinema, acting medical officer of health for APH at Wednesday’s board meeting.
As a result, the APH board approved a resolution to write to the Ministry of Health to request an increase in base funding so that the health unit can effectively continue its work in core programs. “This has been an issue everywhere, in every sector in many ways, but we notice that here we need public health inspectors. We are building a recruitment strategy to attract them to Algoma.”
