Christine Igot is hoping to edit a few pages in the history books to better reflect the contributions of the man responsible for French settlement in North America and for founding Port-Royal, the first permanent European settlement in what is now Canad...

“I was very excited about tonight,” she said as the crowds finally trickled out of the theatre after the screening and an hour-long question and answer session with Igot and Paul Lalonde, the supervisor of interpretation at Port-Royal National Historic Site. “I was very excited to see so many people in the community come out and learn a bit more about Dugua de Mons.”
“That is what Canadian historian Marcel Trudel has said,” Igot explained. “Because Dugua de Mons was the one who had the money and he is the one who came here, financed and outfitted the ships, and then when the monopoly was revoked, and was re-given for one year in 1608, he is the one who sent Champlain to establish the habitation in Quebec.
“So he promoted that, and because of him, and because of those who were a part of his group, they stayed; even though The Habitation was burnt down in 1613, Poutrincourt's son stayed, married a Mi'kmaw woman, had children,” Igot said. “And La Tour, who had come early with Poutrincourt when he was only 15, stayed, and La Tour was here in the 1640s — lived his whole life here, never went back to France.
“We have people at the Acadian Museum in Louisiana that have been interested in this, will have a copy of this film, will be able to show it there,” she said. “And we’ll have this up on YouTube so people can use this as a reference, Anglophones especially, because there are a lot of books written in French about this period, about the French in North America, about the French under King Henri IV. The history exists, not as much for English speaking people, and that’s what we have to work on.
