The provinces\u0027 objections are well founded

In this familiar tug of war, most of the blame should be placed on the federal government. Instead of meddling in what is clearly a provincial responsibility, the feds should work at solving the serious problems besetting their own services, ranging from excruciatingly slow passport processing to immigration delays .The NP Comment newsletter from columnist Colby Cosh and NP Comment editors tackles the important topics with boldness, verve and wit.

He did, however, unveil the strings that Ottawa wants attached to any such increase. It appears that the federal government would like to set up some kind of national health data agency to be put in charge of compiling statistics on health outcomes, which would allow governments and Canadians to see whether the additional investments are making a difference.

Is this the kind of overwrought structure that Duclos is asking the provinces and territories to adhere to? If so, their objections are well founded. Dubé is also willing to work with CIHI so that the data is standardized for national and international use. What Quebec and other provinces do not want is for Ottawa to use a national database to force policy changes on them.
