Leafs-Lightning playoff preview: Five keys to victory
The first game or two tend to be filled with penalties. But the deeper the series goes, the more likely that the refs will put away their whistles. So, winning the battle at five-on-five is a key. The Leafs scored 184 times at five-on-five this season, Tampa 175. Last spring, the Leafs scored 13 times at five-on-five, Tampa 12 times.
Creating a bigger margin there would go a long way.Any failings at even strength can be made up on power plays and penalty kills. With penalties more rare, power-play chances are even more valuable. Tampa Bay had more five-on-four goals this season — 63 to 61 — but Toronto scored more often down a man . Last year, the Lightning power play was the difference, scoring seven times in 33 chances. The Leafs scored four in 28 chances.
