Mike Wilner: Jays drop three of four to Yankees, but they had their chances

, loading the bases with nobody out. Hits with runners in scoring position have been hard to come by for the Jays — they were just 6 for 36 in dropping three of four to the Yanks — and they didn’t get any in that seventh inning.

Brandon Belt hit a fly ball to left that was too shallow to score Merrifield, then Vladimir Guerrero Jr. came off the bench to raucous cheers and hit fly ball to centre that was a little deeper, scoring the run. followed with a liner to the right-centre gap that was run down by New York centre-fielder Harrison Bader. The Jays didn’t have another batter reach base in the game.Yankees reliever Ron Marinaccio retired Merrifield, Jansen and Kirk in order in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal the win. It was the first career save for the 27-year-old from Toms River, N.J. in his 59th big-league appearance.

The Yankees got saves from three different relievers in the series. Michael King nailed it down Monday and Wandy Peralta on Tuesday before Marinaccio slammed the door in the finale.
