Far more Islanders have sought financial help from the Red Cross than in the rest of Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec combined.

While in recent weeks some have reported wait times as high as four hours for Fiona relief applications at the Red Cross office at the Confederation Court Mall in Charlottetown, on the afternoon of Oct.18, some staff told applicants that wait times were down to around half an hour. - Stu Neatby • The GuardianCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Nearly two-thirds of P.E.I.’s population have applied for assistance from the Red Cross since post-tropical storm Fiona hit the region.

Naifeh says he knows others, including single students with no children, who have been able to obtain both of the relief cheques."We have the right to know who authorizes the payment and how they distribute it," he said.As of Oct. 18, there have been 93,426 households in Atlantic Canada and Eastern Quebec who registered for Red Cross financial assistance post-Fiona. This represents approximately 180,150 people.

Dan Bedell of the Canadian Red Cross confirmed close to 58,000 households in P.E.I., representing over 110,000 individuals, have registered for Red Cross assistance. - Contributed So far, 34,017 P.E.I. households have received $250 cheques. Most received the payments via an online e-transfer. Others accessed the funds through a cheque or pre-paid credit card.The Red Cross has faced scrutiny and criticism after many Islanders faced hours-long lineups at the organization’s offices in Charlottetown, Summerside or Montague in recent weeks. Thousands were told they needed to verify their identification or address in-person before receiving their $250 assistance payments.
