Wind is a staple of our weather in Atlantic Canada. Wicked winds can blow any time of year in our region, but we often hear and talk a lot about the winds of March.

In fact, March is the month with the highest average wind speed for some locations, including Halifax Stanfield, N.S., and Deer Lake, N.L., according to data from Environment and Climate Change Canada.First, it’s important to know what creates wind in the first place. Wind is mainly caused by the uneven heating of Earth’s surface by the sun. In turn, this creates differences in temperature and air pressure, which drives our winds in Atlantic Canada and around the world.
This creates clashes between colder and warmer air masses, leading to more wind. These clashes can also form strong low-pressure systems, which leads to, you guessed it, more wind. Wind moves from higher to lower pressure areas, and the greater difference in pressure between the two allows more wind to rip through the region.Have a weather question you would like answered?
