Alberta author works with Bram Stoker's kin on Dracula comic book series
“Now, I’m a big fan of Bram Stoker,” says the Northern Ireland-born McAuley, co-author of the comic book mini-series Dracula The Return: Cult of The White Worm, the first issue of which was released at the beginning of December. “But I don’t think Dracula is his best work. I love his drama and his poetry. But I somehow ended up meeting a woman from Edmonton on a vampire chatboard years ago, eventually marrying her and moving here. She was really big into Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
As it turned out, Dacre Stoker was more than happy with a futuristic take on his ancestor’s literary creation. In fact, he requested that McAuley work with him in co-authoring a graphic novel adaptation of Bram Stoker’s short story, The Squaw. Realizing that this was a terrible title to use for their inaugural collaboration, the two agreed to change it to The Virgin’s Embrace.
“It’s all really interesting stuff that we’ve made part of the story,” McAuley says. “Like, Dracula was a social Darwinist. He was actually a scientist who had a lab and believed in the survival of the fittest. So he created these creatures that were almost Neanderthal, and there’s a scene where he takes on the role of a satanic priest and sacrifices a young girl. We’ve integrated that in as well as the White Worm in a way that’s quite Lovecraftian.
