Federal ridings will be redrawn under a new proposal before a federal commission. The boundaries of a handful of this province’s federal electoral districts are set to change dramatically.
The commission is composed of Nova Scotia Court of Appeal justice Cindy Bourgeois, Cape Breton and Dalhousie University political science professors David Johnson and Louise Carbert.Starting in the north, Cape Breton will get what the commission calls an “urban riding” representing industrial Cape Breton. That will see Eskasoni, home of current Sydney-Victoria MP Jaime Battiste, carved off and placed along with other surrounding rural communities into the riding of Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish.
But unlike with the first draft, which was published before the public consultations, this final plan won’t go before the public again. There, the three Liberal MPs most affected by the changes expressed their discontent on Tuesday. “The message at home is if you think Arisaig and Ingonish belong in the same riding, you’re crazy,” said Fraser.
For her part, Halifax-West MP Lena Diab objected to changes to her riding, including splitting St. Margarets Bay.
