Baseless attacks on Ken Sim show the ugly side of progressive politics
, “Vancouver is now a police state,” because Sim wants to increase the size of the Vancouver Police Department by a mere seven per cent . And in perhaps the most extraordinary accusation of all, Sim was painted as an upholder ofOne tries to find polite language to describe such accusations. “Deranged” is, I think, as clean as it is possible to keep it. But such deranged thinking does have its benefits.
Were Sim of the correct political persuasion — that is to say, left-of-centre — there would be no end to the cooing about what his victory represents. Instead, left-wing extremists and ideologues have decided he is a fascist or a representative of systematic racism because he tacks slightly right in his political views and got an endorsement from theSadly, once powerful words to denote the very worst of society and humankind have become so overused as to be meaningless.
Such disturbing views can only be held when one does not see race as an immutable fact, but an identity wherein certain races or sexual orientations have characteristics that can be set out in. Individuals can then be unhelpfully described by these alleged features. Sim challenges those views and is therefore painted as a danger, or a traitor.
Stereotyping in this way is perniciously used to diminish accomplished members of formerly disadvantaged groups who have even slightly conservative views. In the eyes of woke left factions, the only possible reason visible minorities could hold such beliefs is that they have assimilated the power structure of whiteness.
However, one of the refreshing elements of Sim’s landslide victory was that it was a clear repudiation of a city hall that was hellbent on being as woke as possible and using Twitter as its policy guide. In the end, it turns out that people in Vancouver are far more worried about getting stabbed than they are about the vague implications of climate change.
