Today marks the three-year anniversary of Snowmageddon and the start of an eight-day state of emergency that crippled the capital city. Today's forecast calls for called for light rain and 8 C. Quite the contrast. nlwx

SaltWire Network weather specialist Allister Aalders credits 'very strong blocking ridges of high-pressure kind of surrounding Newfoundland' to the north as the reason for our snowless winter — so farA no-parking sign in St. John's is nearly buried in this file photo from Snowmageddon 2020. - UnsplashST. St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen called it one of the biggest operational challenges the capital city ever faced.“It was just such a mass amount of snow over a short period, and then this winter we've had record-breaking amounts in terms of no snowfall — almost the exact opposite.”On Monday, the forecast for Tuesday, Jan. 17 — the three-year anniversary of Snowmageddon — called for light rain and 8 C.

“It allowed most of these systems that did track towards Atlantic Canada to either miss eastern Newfoundland completely, or put us on the rainier side of these systems,” Aalders said. While the rest of January isn’t looking like it’s going to be significantly snowy — at least not on the Snowmageddon scale — people should still keep their shovels ready.

He said it’s difficult to predict precipitation for the rest of the winter, but he expects temperatures to remain generally higher than usual.
