وبدأت الجلسة علنية حيث تم نقلها عبر وسائل الإعلام، ووجهت التهم لنجيب ثم قدم المدعي العام مطالعة للتأكيد على الجرائم التي ارتكبها نجيب وقادة الأجهزة الأمنية في وحضر الجلسة ذوو الضحايا وعدد من أعضاء الهيئة الوطنية للعدالة الانتقالية، وممثلون عن منظمات قانونية وإنسانية دولية. وتوقع المصدر، لوكالة الأنباء الألمانية "د ب أ" أن "تنتهي محاكمة عاطف نجيب خلال 3 جلسات قادمة، على أن تنطلق محاكمة قادمة لرموز النظام من عسكريين وأمنيين ما يحقق سير العدالة الانتقالية من خلال إنصاف الضحايا".
