Waste from an old dumpsite at a beach in Meteghan. SCOTIAN SHORES - ContributedMETEGHAN, N.S. — Just over 6,200 pounds of waste was removed from the shores of St. Mary’s Bay in Digby County during Ocean Warrior cleanups at Meteghan Beach and in Church Point on Feb. 18 and 19.
Twenty-six people took part in the Church Point shoreline clean-up behind Université Sainte-Anne the following day, removing 2,578 pounds. More than 500 pounds of rope, 15 tires, a fridge, and 2 large pieces of aquaculture gear were removed. Riley said one thing she’s noticed while doing shoreline clean-ups is the erosion of some of the berms, which is causing a lot of damage and bringing out a lot more garbage.
“I first got involved with Scotian Shores about two years ago,” says Jeannine, adding more and more people – because of the efforts of Scotian Shores – are becoming aware of debris littering local shorelines.
