Though he is the No. 6 ranked team here, Sturmay’s Brier path rates as one of the most unconventional. Early in the season, he booked a January trip to Arizona to play in the annual Golden Wrench Classic at the Coyotes Curling Club in Tempe.
The club is completely volunteer-run, so the same curlers playing the Tuesday night ladies’ or Wednesday night men’s leagues also take care of the ice and work behind the bar. There is an event held there in mid-July called the Hotter than Hell bonspiel.His rink beat Carruthers in the final and the Canadian tour ranking points earned from it put him over the edge into the Brier field.
